Gustav Bertha's music is frequently classed as 'mood music' and should appeal to fans of Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave. He plays an unusual mix of indie-pop and cabaret. The flavour is melancholic with strong melodies. There is an experimental nature to his music in the mixing of genres - pop beats and grating guitars, cello and piano, viola and accordion, radio squeals and various other ambient noises. Gustav Bertha has an agreeable and distinctively Scottish-accented singing voice which puts his quirky lyrics firmly in the foreground.

Since arriving in Switzerland in 2000, Gustav Bertha has recorded five full-length CDs. He has built up an international following being played on the US college radio network and radio stations in the United Kingdom. His songs have also been featured on promotional compilations along with other notable independent and mainstream artists. Gustav Bertha currently plays live as a solo act with just a piano and vocals. In 2004 he is looking to build up a fuller live band while working on his next collection of songs.
