Written for the opening FMV sequence of a friends computer game, that never got finished... Inspired by John Williams' Duel of the Fates from Star Wars Episode 1. Originally intended for a rock band and choir, I've since re-written it as an orchestral peice, (which is somewhat fitting).
For V3, I've cleaned up a couple of parts, then added both a pipe organ and a choir, from the East West Orchestral Silver package. The choir could be better, but I still think it adds to the peice, (and is getting closer to what I always intended). I don't think there's really all that much I can do with this peice now, musically - it's mainly the instrument sound quality thats the problem now - (and that just takes money to solve - which is something I don't have). |

My first Organ piece, using the pipe-organ I got with EastWest/QuantumLeap Orchestral Silver edition - it sounded so good I had to write a piece for it...
I've tweaked a few things here and there for v2.3... |

Since the celtic instruments I have are a) no-where near good enough to use for a more traditional-style celtic album, and even the next album I've tried after that still seems to have problems, I thought I'd try yet another tack - this time using a few more synths/drum-kits/loops etc.. I think it's working a bit better compared to the others.
With that in mind I'm now working on another album, with this track as the lead and (maybe) title-track.
Since I seemed to be hitting a brick wall with my previous efforts - (A Tune For Thadeus is an example) - (though I'm planning an going back to them and seeing what more I can do with them now) - and I needed to see what sort of percussion package I'd like - a friend of mine offered the use of his DAW while he was on holiday. Although I didn't think I had much use for most of the instruments he had, it gave me a good idea of what it is I'm looking for.
(This track contains two packages from his DAW, (and was one of two tracks I started on it) - EastWest/Quantum Leap Ra and Best Service Artist Grooves). (I though most of the beats from that sounded too samey, so picked one and built this track over it. It works, but I don't know if just one track is worth buying a package for (especially when money is as tight as it is). (I'm looking at getting EWQL Stormdrum 2 though, if I can get any money together for it).
In the meantime, I still think this track could do with a little more work, but it'll do for now. I'd like to hear what anyone thinks to it, and any feedback will be much appreciated. (It's really the first track that I've actually thought about PRODUCING, rather than just composing).
UPDATE: Both copies of the cubase project of this peice have since become corrupted, and I doubt I'll be able to do any more with it. Unfortunately, I really don't think it's quite good enough to use as is. Not quite sure what to do about it though... |

Formerly known as Tune A, I've updated a few things with this peice for version 3 - (mainly adding a couple of synths so it fits with the rest of the peices on the album). Could probably do with a little more tightening up though... |

I've tightened this track up a little, toned the flute down at it's height too, which helped.

Named in tribute a good friend, who was both a good pilot and a good bluegrass/country guitar player... He unfortunately died when his newly aquired Microlite suffered from structural failiure a couple of years ago...
Added some extra percussion for V2.3 - though I@m still not sure about it... |

Since the main music in Stardock's Galactic Civilizations 2 computer game reminded of this piece, (because of some of the chord changes), which I wrote on my violin for an old online friend (called Rachel), I thought I'd create a version using similar instrumentation.
I feel it works quite well, though is a bit too slow, to include an additional harmony part I originally wrote. (It was written more as an old-style waltz, and played much quicker). |

Very nice music Darren. You've really got some good compositions here, but I must say that they would gain a lot more if played by a real orchestra. I like the sounds to be more authentic, and you just can't get that on the computer. But keep up the good work...one day your music will be performed at Carnegie Hall :)
Cheers from Denmark |

ok - from one musician to another - I'll be critical but its all constructive!
One overwhemling thought - less computer sounds and more real playing - not that its bad - but I was dying to hear a real violin by the end!
"Medley fast" - it really builds up into a VERY uplifting and joyful tune. To be honest I feel the start needs work - but the main theme and the layers are wonder ...ful. Do you play any of this live? I feel a real violin part playing the main theme would make this great atmospheric game or theme music!
"Heidi's Tune" - wow.... emotive is the only thing I can think of saying. Was she an ex girlfriend or something? This was VERY touching. Really moved me. Well done. Takes a lot to do that. As backing music to relax or cry to it's perfect.
"Excalibur" - more real instruments please!!! This is really good. You definitely have a skill at arrangement. Maybe a few time changes here would be perfect. I kept thinking 6/8 in the middle - don't know why - but it felt it was going to drop and didn't. Not sure what was missing here...... Its teasing me all the way through - but didn't seem as rounded as the other tracks - but at the same time had the most popular potential.
"A Jig for Noggin" - HOW cute?!? I can really imagine your cat here. this was musical visualisation at its best. He he! I love it! on my regular playlist. So cheeky and sleek.
Felt there would be another theme coming in at any moment - but turned out to be a little walk for Noggin, sniffing flowers and rolling in the grass, pottering through the n... |

Hi Darren,
You've written a very good musical driving piece. My daughter is a violinist and thouroughly enjoyed this piece. She's been playing for about nine years and said that your piece was "tight." Good work. I was really attracted to the cello and lower instrumental incorporation in the piece. It gave a really good foundation for the rest of the piece to build off o ...f. Best of everythin in all you do!
